FilmoXarxa

FilmoXarxa is a new initiative, launched in 2018, for the regional dissemination of the auteur cinema of the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the ’Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (ICEC), with the collaboration of the Federació Catalana de Cineclubs, the Direcció General de Política Lingüística and the Agència Catalana de Cooperació al Desenvolupament.

FilmoXarxa has a threefold objective:

  • to promote and disseminate Catalan and European cinema
  • to increase the offering of films in the Catalan language on screens in Catalonia
  • to promote a film culture among Catalan citizens.

The titles that FilmoXarxa makes available to film societies are films that have not previously been shown in Catalonia and are sourced primarily from independent distributors; or European and international films that are regarded as being of cultural or artistic interest and have not been distributed commercially in Catalonia.

To this pack, comprising around 15 films every two years, are added the Basics of Catalan Cinema restored by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, as well as various documentaries proposed by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation. All the films will be screened at cinemas associated with the project in their original version, subtitled in Catalan, and in digital format.

In its initial phase, film societies belonging to the Catalan Federation of Film Societies will form part of FilmoXarxa, which will also be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project, but in the future it will be open to other public or private entities that can accredit their connection with a screening facility approved by the Cinema Act. FilmoXarxa has taken over the former county-wide structure of the Filmoteca, which is now integrated in this new initiative.

A total of twenty film societies across Catalonia have joined the initiative:

Based on programmes such as Laya Films (I) Noticiaris, Laya Films (II), independent documentaries, amateur films, films by Segundo de Chomón and Catalan film heritage and sound documentaries such as Fuego en España, this initiative will help to disseminate the film heritage of Catalonia.

The most frequently requested programmes are ‘Chomón per a la mainada’ (Chomón for Kids), ‘Chomón: màgia, pòcimes i fades’ (Chomón: Magic, Potions and Fairies) and ‘Documentaries of the Republic (1931-1933)’.
