Basada en un fet real, narra la història del cuirassat alemany Graf Spee, comandat pel capità Langsdorff a començaments de la Segona Guerra Mundial. Una de les darreres col·laboracions del tàndem Powell-Pressburger i el seu èxit comercial més gran.

Realitzada onze anys després de la guerra, el tractament comprensiu de l’enemic no va ser tan polèmic com el de The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

A Powell li agradava tant la història que fins i tot en va escriure una novel·la: The Last Voyage of the Graf Spee.
